How is the reference check like for Southeast Asia offices usually? Do they ask for performance references and payslip when/after extending an offer?

Firms ask for your current salary in the first interview with the recruiter and some firms ask for payslip.

Hi,

They should not ask for payslips or performance reviews.

In general, the background check aims to verify your education records, employment history, and other relevant information.

Hope this helps.

Best,

Anto

Hi,

Sharing my perspective having interviewed as an experienced hire.

  • Payslips - MBB doesn't ask for this (although the broader Singapore culture this is not unheard of)
  • References - I did get asked to provide 2 references
  • They will generally run your name through a software/service that does background checks (e.g. criminal/legal records etc)

Hope this helps to clarify.

I doubt they will ask for performance references or payslip. I haven't heard about that happening anywhere in the world, as that creates litigation risk with your previous company (that would give them the power to prevent you from moving into another job).

Particularly on the payslip, I don't even think you would have to do it. And if you lied, so what? Would they have offered you less if had given them a lower number? But don't worry, they won't ask for this.

Hi there,

I'd be surprised if they ask for payslips. References are rare, but it depends on the specific company/role.

More likely than not, the background check will just work in the “background” so to speak, where they'll check your employment history + education records
